The economic impact that Hurricane Gustav may have had on the Gulf Coast has not yet been determined. While it may be significant, it will be nowhere near the catastrophic proportions of Hurricane Katrina three years ago. Petroleum production on the Gulf is still halted, but it will be back online in a few days. It took producers weeks to come back online after Katrina. The levees in New Orleans held, just barely, but they held, sparing the city from another devastating flood.
But there is more. There is a new Hurricane that has developed in the Atlantic Ocean near the Bahamas. Hurricane Hannah, in fact stalled for hours over the Southeastern Bahamas, continuously hitting the islands with fierce winds and rain. If the current tracking patterns hold, Hannah is expected to make landfall between Georgia and South Carolina as a Category 2 Hurricane.
And there is yet another named tropical storm, Ike, making track just behind Hannah. It is expected to become a hurricane also as it approaches the Bahamas. It is too early to tell where or whether it will make landfall in the US.
Once again, at TicosLand.com, we are keeping track of these storms and hoping that they cause as little damage as possible. Costa Rica, because of its geographical positioning, is blessed with not having to face the fury of these storms, but we are sure that Costa Ricans and people all around the world are offering the people of the US their solidarity in these trying times.
